Places to Visit in Chittorgarh

1. Chittorgarh Fort

The Chittorgarh Fort is spread in an area of 240 hectares. The legendary tale goes that the magnificent fort had begun to be constructed during the Mahabharata era by Bheem, one of the Pandava brothers.  The fort is situated at the top of a hill at a height of 180 meters. The Fort is a colossal structure whose environs’  reverberate with unbelievable tales of brave men and women. There are a number of incredible monuments inside the fort. Though some of them have been damaged by the passage of time. The tourists can reach the Fort only by passing through seven gates and finally arriving at the gate of Ram. Jaimal and Kalla, the martyred heroes have been honored by building two cenotaphs at the second and the third gate. It is they who had fought bravely against Akbar and finally laid their lives in the siege of 1568. 

2. Rani Padmini’s Palace

The Rajput history is marked by the important event of bravery that involved the Rani’s Padmini’s Palace. There is a lotus pool that consisted of a pavilion shaped structure that provided privacy for the women of the royal family. It is in this lotus pool that the then Sultan of Delhi, Ala-ud-din Khilji had seen the reflection of Rani Padmini’s reflection and got so bewitched by her beauty that he was compelled to lead his forces in the battle to abduct her.

3. Fateh Prakash Palace

The Fateh Prakash Palace was built by Maharana Fateh Singh. The palace functioned as his residence. It was constructed in the Rajput style of architecture. It has now been converted into a museum. It has a number of collections of wood crafts of Bassi village, weapons like axes, knives and ancient shields, post-medieval statues of Jain Ambica and Indra from Rashmi village, paintings, and crystal ware.

4. Bhamashah ki Haveli

Chittorgarh has a huge number of places of interest that make visiting soulful and satisfying. Bhamashah has an important place in Rajput history. Bhamashah and his brother Tarachand the well known fierce warriors fought numerous battles under Maharana Pratap And the prominent one was at Haldighati. The history reveals that when Maharana ran out of funds for the fight against the Mughals the Bhamashah and Tarachand came forward unrelentingly to donate him all their wealth. The Bhamashah ki Haveli is situated in front of the top khana in Chittorgarh. The archaeological survey of India carries out maintenance work. Visitors can see the Mahadev temple which is near the haveli. It is a pleasing experience to visit such a beautiful haveli surrounded all by custard apple trees.

5. Meenal Waterfall

The Meenal Waterfall is around 80 km from Bhilwara. It is on the Bhilwara-Kota road. The waterfalls to a depth of 150 meters into a V-shaped valley with great force giving a thrilling experience. It is a splendid sight to behold. The best time to visit is from July to October.

6. Meerabai Temple

Meerabai was an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna and she worshipped him at this temple. The temple has a beautiful shrine surrounded by an open porch with four small pavilions in four corners giving it a pious look.

7. Gaumukh Reservoir

The water spring emerges from a formation of rocks that resembles a cow’s mouth- Gaumukh and falls into a deep tank called Gaumukh Reservoir which is considered by Hindus very holy and sacred.

8. Vijay Stambh

Vijay Stambh also called the Tower of Victory was constructed by Maharana Kumbh between 1440 to 1448 A.D. to eternize his victory of defeating the Muslim rulers of Malwa and Gujarat. The Stambh is built partly from red sandstone and partly from white marble. It is a nine-story tower embellished with sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses. One can enjoy the splendid view of the city from the terrace and the balconies.

9. Kirti Stambh

The Kirti Stambh is devoted to Adinath Ji. Adinathji was the first Jain Tirthankara. Kirti Stambh is further made beautiful by the figure of Jain Monk. This Stambh is a seven-storied structure that was constructed by a wealthy Jain merchant in the 12th century A.D.

10. Tulja Bhavani Temple

The Tulja Bhavani Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the Goddess Durga. It was constructed in the 16th century by Banvir. The legend has it that this temple was named after Banvir who had donated ornaments, equivalent to his weight –  Tula dhan, for the relief funds.

11. Rana Kumba Palace

Rana Kumbha Palace is located inside the Chittorgarh Fort. It is situated near the Vijay Stambha which is close to the entrance gate. It is believed that the palace was constructed by Bappa Rawal in 734 A.D., during the period of his reign, which was then restored to a former better state by Maharana Kumbh, and afterward, it was named after him. It is affirmed that the palace has underground cellars where Rani Padmini and other women committed Jauhar which is known as self- immolation.

12. Temples of Baroli- Rawatbhata

This is a wonderful example of Hindu architecture. It was constructed by the Huna rulers in the 9th century. It is situated where two rivers the  Brahmani and Chambal converge at Rawatbhata. The important temple here is the Ghateshwar Mahadev temple, apart from this there are nine other temples.

13. Nagari

The crucial tourist attractions in Nagari are ancient Shiva temple, Ubhidivat which is also named Prakash Stambh, Hathiyo ka Bara. Nagari is a village located 18km North of Chittorgarh on the banks of river Beach. In the past, it was named Majhimika or Madhyamika. Nagari was ruled by the Sibi tribes in the first century. In the second century, Nagari came under the influence of Western kshatriya. Nagari was ruled by the Malavas in the third century.
