Places to Visit in Ajmer

1. The Ajmer Sharif Dargah

The Ajmer Sharif Dargah is a Sufi shrine that encompasses the Maqbara of the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. The Ajmer Sharif was built in the 13th century. The people believe that here their prayers will be accepted. This shrine has three gates – the main gate which is also named Nizam gate, the Shah Jahan gate built by the Mughal Emperor and the Buland Darwaza. Here sacred and appetizing food is served to the devotees.

2. Adhai Din ka Jhonpda

The Adhai Din ka Jhonpda was constructed to function as a Sanskrit college but Sultan Ghori in 1198 A.D. converted it into a mosque. It has beautiful Indo-Islamic architecture. The structure was further embellished by Sultan Iltutmish in 1213 A.D.

3. Mayo College

Mayo College was founded in 1875 by Richard Bourke who was the 6th earl of India from 1869 to 1872. Mayo was built for the sons of the Indian upper classes mainly the princess and nobles of India. It is the boys' residential school in Ajmer.

4. Anasagar Lake

The Anasagar Lake is a picturesque artificial lake built by Arnoraj Chauhan, Son of Ajapal Chauhan between 1135 and 1150 A.D. Arnoraj was also known by the name Anaji, from this only lake got its name. After many years Mughal Emperor Jahangir laid out the Daulat Bagh garden near the lake. Five pavilions which are named 'Baradari', were built between the garden and lake by emperor Shah Jahan.

4. Sonijiki Nasiyan

It is an astounding example of ornate architecture. The entrance is made up of red stone and the marble staircase inside is carved with images of the holy Tirthankaras – omniscient teachers of the Jain faith who preached righteousness. It was built in the 19th century. The temple is one of the richest temples in India. The main chamber, Swarn Nagri which means the city of gold is named so because of the many gold-plated wooden figures it houses within its walls.

5. Lake Foy Sagar

Lake Foy Sagar was built by an engineer, Mr. Foy in 1892 AD. The reason behind taking up this work was to provide a dearth relief of wage employment to locals. Lake Foy Sagar provides a scenic view of the Aravali Range.

6. Nareli Jain Temple

Nareli Jain temple also named the Shri Gyandoayatirthkshetra located on the outskirts of Ajmer on the National Highway to Jaipur. It consists of 24 miniature temples in its vicinity. Nareli Jain temple is an important pilgrimage for Digambar Jains.

7. Sai Baba Temple

Sai Baba temple was built by Suresh K. Lal, a resident of the Garib Nawaz city in 1999. The temple is spread over an area of 2 acres at Ajainagar. The temple has beautiful architecture and is famous among all Sai Baba devotees. The purest form of marble that holds the unique quality of the translucent stone is used in building the temple. Sai Baba devotees should surely visit the temple having a beautiful piece of architecture.

8. Ajmer Government Museum

Ajmer Government Museum is one of the chief tourist destinations in Ajmer. The museum is also named Bharatpur Museum consisting of a collection of archaeological artifacts. The museum is housed within the splendid fortified palace of the Mughal Emperor, built in 1570. It has stones sculptures, inscriptions and armorers, featuring the outstanding paintings of the previous Maharajas of Bharatpur.

9. Gateway of Tara Garh Fort

Gateway of Tara Garh Fort built on a crust of a hill consists of two colossal bastions on both sides with strong guard rooms consisting of sculptures of elephants bedecking it. The main attractions of this fort are water reservoirs and the Bhim Burj on which the canon, Garbhgunjam was mounted. The gateway of Tara Garh Fort is also named as Dargah of HazratMiran Sayyed Husain Khangswar. The fort also consists of a beautiful Rani Mahal having stained windows and a Mural which was used to house the wives of rulers. All these make this fort an incomparable example of Rajputana architecture.

10. Kishangarh Fort

Kishangarh Fort is situated in Kishangarh, Rajasthan. On paying a visit one sees jails, granaries, armories present inside. There is a darbar hall which was a place where the kings carried out their official meetings. One can find lakes such as Gundu- lav Talab and Hamirsagar along with the fort.

11. Victoria Clock Tower

The Victoria Clock Tower is situated just opposite the railway station. It was built in 1887. It is famous for its architectural beauty.VictoriaJublee Clock tower is one of the eye-catching towers.

12. Shahid Smarak Ajmer

Shahid Smarak in Ajmer is one of the structures built in remembrance of the sacrifices of the brave souls. It is situated right in front of the railway station. On a number of occasions, the locals gather around the Shahid Smarak to pay tribute to the martyrs. The memorial is decorated with colourful light and fountains making it a prepossessing site to gaze at.

13. Prithviraj Smarak

Prithviraj Smarak is made in the honour of the great Rajput chief, Prithviraj Chauhan III. The memorial showcases the statue of Prithviraj III seated on his horse which is made of black stone. The memorial is surrounded by the Aravali range giving tourists a scenic view of the city of Ajmer. It also has a garden where visitors can stroll and relax.
