Starting From

Chopta is the starting point of Tungnath trek and Chandrashila Trek which is one of the popular treks of Uttarakhand. Tungnath is located in a small village that is surrounded by lush green Pine, Rhododendron and Deodar trees. This is an ideal trek destination for beginners as the level of difficulty in this trek is very minimal and is one of the easiest treks. While trekking you can explore some breathtaking sites including Shiva temple, the view of Mighty Himalayas, the lush green paranormal view and much more. To start this trek, first you need to to reach Chopta using a motorable vehicle and after a halt in Chopta the next day you will be trekking for 4 kilometers to reach Tungnath and after that, you need to trek for 1.5 kilometers further to reach Chandrashila and after exploring the site you need to trek down to Chopta again. The whole trek can be completed in just one day. You will be astonished by the view of Panchachuli Peaks, Neelkanth, Nanda Devi, Kedarnath that are all covered during the trek.

Tungnath - It is one of the highest Temples that is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is among the Panch Kedar temples of Uttarakhand. Panch Kedar represents the five temples where different body parts of the bull incarnation of Lord Shiva are worshipped. In Tungnath the hands of the bull incarnation of Lord Shiva are worshipped. This is also known as Tritiya Kedar that is the third Temple that is visited in a row among Panch Kedar. Tungnath is located at an elevation of 3680 meters above sea level. It is considered to be more than a 1000 Years old temple of Lord Shiva. A total distance of 4 kilometers is needed to be covered while trekking from Chopta to reach this Temple. This temple was discovered by Adi Shankaracharya and now it is looked after by some local Brahmins of Makku village. During the winter season, the ideal of Lord Shiva is shifted to Mukunath which is located at a distance of 19 km from the temple.

Chandrashila - It is located at an altitude of 4000 meters above the sea level and has the best paranormal 360-degree view of Majestic Himalayan peaks such as Kedar peak, Bandarpoonch, Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi and many others. Chandrashila can be reached after trekking to Tungnath by covering a distance of 1.5 kilometers from Tungnath. According to mythology, it is believed that this is the same place where Lord Rama meditated after winning over Ravan. There is one more saying regarding this place that “Chandra” who is the moon God penance here for some time and due to which this place got its name as Chandrashila which literally means the moon rock. There is also a small peak which is named as Rudra Mukhi as the shape of the Mountain appears like the face of Lord Shiva, it is also believed that Ravan meditated at this place to please Lord Shiva and hence it is also known as Ravan Shila.

The base camp is located at Chopta and from there you need to trek for at least 4 kilometers to reach Tungnath and then it's just 1.5 km which you need to cover more to reach Chandrashila. Seasons for Tungnath and Chandrashila Trekking

Summer

During the summer months, the weather of Chopta remains clear and present. The Mighty Himalayas can easily be visible and can also feel the cool breeze passing through during the evening and early morning. During this time period, it is advisable to carry e some light woolens as it may get Chilly during the night time.

Winter

During the winter months, the complete area gets under the blanket of thick snow and at this point of time, there are just a few places of accommodation. The difficulty level of the track increases during the winter season due to heavy snowfall on the route but the beauty of Chopta gets enhanced due to the heavy snowfall. During this point of time, t is advisable to carry some heavy woolen to cover yourself and be prevented from the freezing weather

Monsoon

The Monsoon season enhances the greenery of this place but the level of the k becomes more challenging due to heavy rainfall as there are more chances of occurring a landslide. During the monsoon month, the scenic beauty and landscape of Chopta get enhanced but you need to take the risk for having the sight of it. At this time period it is not advisable to do the track but still, if you want then you need to carry a raincoat and umbrella to prevent yourself from getting wet and catching cold.

How To Reach

By Rail

Haridwar and Rishikesh railway station are the nearest railway stations which are connected to the major cities of India. From the railway station, you can hire local bus private vehicles for a taxi to reach Chopta which is the base camp for the trek.

By Road

There are many private buses, taxes and government buses that run from Haridwar to Chopta. The total distance between Haridwar and Chopta is around 200 km which can be covered in the time period of 8 hours.

By Air

Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport which is located in Dehradun. From the airport, you can hire any local vehicle for a cab to reach Chopta by covering a distance of 179 kilometers in 6 hours.

Best Time To Visit

Though it can be visited throughout the year but the best time is during the summer season. The weather of Chopta in summer remains safe and sound. Adventure lovers are able to trek and camp here because of the ideal weather. In the Monsoon season, Chopta becomes more pleasant, greenery jungle, and snow-capped Himalayan Peak would also be very joyful but due to heavy rains and landslides in the monsoon can be unpleasant for you. Due to snowfall, this valley becomes mini Switzerland of India, and adventure lovers enjoy trekking in winters also but it needs some extra effort.

  • You need to have a tracking stick without that you can't Move in the mountains.
  • No tight on body-hugging clothes are allowed.
  • You need to wear light clothes which can dry easily.
  • You need to hire a trekking guide for exploring mountains and roaming around the nearby places.
  • Your body should be fully hydrated and you need to carry a water bottle along with you on the trek.
  • A pair of raincoats should be taken along on the trek.

  • While moving upward you should put down your heel first and while coming downwards you need to walk on your flat foot.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Que: Are there any ATM facilities available in Chopta or do I Need to Carry Cash?

Ans: No, the ATM facility is not available in Chopta. If you run out of cash during your trip then you need to travel to Ukhimath by covering a distance of 35 kilometers. In the Ukhimath market, there are two ATMs of SBI Bank ok and PNB Bank you can use any one of them to withdraw your cash.

Que: When can one expect Snowfall in Tungnath and Chandrashila?

Ans: The snowfall can be expected from the month of November till March when the temperature ranges from -15°C to 15°C. Usually, snowfall starts in the month of November and then gradually the layer of the snow thickens by the month of January which makes it difficult for trekkers to find the route.

Que: Can we Do Camping in Tungnath or Chandrashila?

Ans: No, you cannot do camping in Tungnath and Chandrashila but if you want to stay in Tungnath then there are some guest houses and dormitories where you can stay. Even these Guesthouses and dormitories are open for tourists till the month of October and after that, it remains closed throughout the winter season.

Que: Is there any restaurant or Maggie point available on Chandrashila Trek?

Ans: No there are no Food Point or Maggi Point while on the way to Tungnath and Chandrashila, but near Tungnath temple you can spot one or two stalls where you can have some snacks but that too remains open from the month of May till October month and remain closed during the winter months. So it is advisable to have a pre-packed lunch and a water bottle that is to be carried along while going on the trek. One thing that needs to be taken into consideration is that you need to carry back the empty bottles and wrappers of your snacks along with you and maintain the cleanliness of this place.

Que: is the trek to Tungnath and Chandrashila safe during January month?

Ans: During January month the area experiences heavy snowfall and due to which thick sheets of snow of around 5 to 7 feet can be seen and during this period of time the track becomes restricted for the tourist. When some of the snow starts to melt or the way is cleared then the tracking starts again. Other than this you can enjoy trekking all year around.

Que: Where is the Nearest Petrol Pump if I wish to Drive?

Ans: The nearest petrol pump is located in Kund which is at a distance of 40km from Rudraprayag. This is the last Hindustan Petroleum petrol pump that you will get so if you want to drive by yourself make sure that your vehicle’s petrol tank is full.

Que: Is Electricity available in Chopta?

Ans: Chopta is having little or no electricity. You will be supplied with solar electricity in the camp for just 3 to 4 hours during the evening time only.

Que: Is there any network connectivity in Chopta and Tungnath? If yes then which sim is best to use there?

Ans: There is no connectivity of the mobile phone network in Chopta and Tungnath. But still, you can find some signals in BSNL sim cards that too on rare occasions otherwise not networks are available.

Que: Is there any Medical certificate required for the Chandrashila trek?

Ans: No, there is no requirement for any medical certificate as the trek comes under the easy grade.

Que: Is this trek safe for girls?

Ans: yes this trek is fully safe for the female trekkers as the male and female ratio is taken into consideration before starting the trek. Separate camps are provided to the group of girls so that they can be comfortable.

Que: What is the difficulty level of the Chandrashila trek?

Ans: Chandrashila is located at an altitude of 4000 meters but still the path of the trek is the easy one which can be covered by beginners too. 

Que: Where should we Consult in the case of any medical emergency?

Ans: In case of any medical emergency you need to reach Ukhimath by covering a distance of 40km. In the Ukhimath market, you can get several Medical shops, Doctors' clinics but no hospital service is available even there. For hospital services, you need to reach Rudraprayag which is located at a distance of 43 km from Ukhimath.

Que: Is there any public transport available for Chopta? If yes then from where we can get it?

Ans: The public transport is not directly available for Chopta, but you can get some of the public transport from Haridwar and Rishikesh for Ukhimath. After reaching Ukhimath you need to hire local transport for reaching Chopta. 

Que: Where can we stay while on Tungnath and Chandrashila trek?

Ans: During the Chandrashila in Tungnath Trek, Chopta is the only option where you can stay. In Chopta there are multiple options for accommodation in camps, as per your budget you can choose the category of camp you want to stay in.

We will notify you of such changes prior to the phone or through the mail or the best communication method available at that point in time. Those changes may occur due to situations beyond our control like weather problems, cancellations of trains, flights, and political unrest, etc… We will try our best to keep the tour unchanged. However, any compensation or any refund due to such changes will not be paid by us.

    Hotel Bookings

    Hotel bookings are made by us on behalf of our customers. We are having a tie-up with many hotels. Although all rates are updated on our website, still there are chances that the rates of Hotels may go up/down. Sometimes rates of the hotel are hiked during long weekends and during festive seasons. It is better that you confirm the rates before making an online payment over the mail. The quality of the room, amenities or meals which are displayed in photos on hotel websites may vary. Booking of the rooms on the same floor/adjacent rooms/ non-smoking rooms in any hotel is not Guaranteed. The right to change the pre-booked hotel or the category of rooms is reserved, anytime during the tour due to overbooking of a hotel, blocking of the sewage, electricity/water failure, etc.

    Vehicle Bookings

The costs of diesel/petrol prices, interstate taxes, vehicle maintenance cost, toll & taxes, etc are beyond our control. Rates displayed on our website are eligible for change at any time without any prior notice.

    The pre-booked vehicle can be changed to a similar category of vehicle in case of non-availability of the pre-booked vehicle.

    Air-conditioned, as well as non-air-conditioned vehicles, are booked as per request. If the air conditioner stops working due to a technical fault at any time during the tour will not be our responsibility. No refund or change in the vehicle will be made in between the trip unless the vehicle is not in the condition to go further.

    Amendments or changes after booking

    If you wish to do amendments or change the prior booking, you have to inform us in writing by mail.

    Amendment or changes in any booking will be treated as a new booking and will be subject to availability at that time and the additional cost will be charged. The additional cost will be borne by you. There will be an amendment charge of Rs.1000/- applicable.

  • Cancellation Policy

  • Cancelation of the booking will be informed to us in writing on mail. The cancellation charges will be applicable depending upon the services. Cancellation of the hotels and airlines will be done according to their own cancellation policies.

    The cancellation for a package tour, be applicable as follows :

    Cancellation before clear 30 working days or more prior to the date of departure of the Tour : 25% of the total tour cost will be charged.

    Cancellation before clear 29 to 16 working days prior to the date of departure of the Tour : 50% of the total tour cost will be charged.

    Cancellation before less than 15 clear working days prior to the date of departure of the Tour :100% of the total tour cost will be charged.

    Balance Payment

    The complete balance payment has to be made before the starting date of the trip. However, the company can ask you anytime to clear the balance payment before 30 days from the date of departure.

    The right is reserved to amend/change the prices offered for the tour and to adjust our charges due to various factors like currency fluctuations, special/high season charge levied by the suppliers, fuel price rise, travel arrangements, hike in any government taxes or visa amounts or for any other reason before the date of departure. All such increased price must be paid before your departure(Full and final).

    No refund for unutilized services

    There will be no refund or compensation provided for services that are not used. If you fail to avail/use any services due to any reason the company will not provide any kind of refund or any other services as the compensation of the unutilized services.
