During the epic Mahabharata period, Pandavas fought a battle against their brothers and loved ones. In that battle, they killed their family members. They did a cruel deed and got cursed for doing “Brahmahatya”. Now for atonement after doing such a deed lord Krishna and Saint Ved Vayas the writer of the Epic Mahabharata told them to worship and find lord Shiva it's only Shiva who can set them free from a Frightful deed.
In search of Lord Shiva, they came to the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. They started doing austerity for lord shiva. But Lord Shiva was angry with them and didn't manifest in front of them. Pandavas became frustrated and desperate, so lord shiva decided to manifest but in secret form and he decided to take the form of a bull to test Pandavas if they could make out whether the bull was lord Shiva itself or not. The place where lord shiva stayed is known as “Gupt Kashi” and there is a Vishvanath temple also in GuptKashi. Guptkashi is on the way to Kedarnath Dham.
Bhim among the Pandavas was able to recognize that its lord shiva in the form of a bull, lord Shiva didn't want them to see him so, he tried to run but Bhim caught his tail and lord Shiva banged into the mountains and the body of the bull was divided into several parts. The torso from his body remained at Kedarnath and till today his torso is worshipped. The face falls is Rudranath, his arm falls at Tungnath, hairs at Kalpeshwar, and the hind part of his body in Madmaheshwar. Lord Shiva manifested in front of Pandavas and told them that in Kalyug no one can visually see me; they can worship my “Pind” in Kedarkhand.
Chopta is the start line of the Tungnath and Chandrashila Trek which is one of the prominent treks of Uttarakhand. By Rail: Haridwar and Rishikesh railway stations are the nearest railway stations that are connected to the major cities of India. From the railway station, you can hire local bus private vehicles for taxis to reach Chopta which is the base camp for the trek.
By Road: There are many private buses, taxis, and government buses that run from Haridwar to Chopta. The total distance between Haridwar and Chopta is around 200 km which can be covered in 8 hours.
By Air: Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport which is located in Dehradun. From the airport, you can hire any local vehicle for a cab to reach Chopta by covering a distance of 179 kilometers in 6 hours.
Though it is often visited throughout the year the best time is during the summer season. The weather of Chopta in summer remains safe and sound.
