Places to Visit in Spiti Valley

1. Chandratal Lake

Chandratal Lake is a paradise for adventure enthusiasts. It is located at an elevation of 4300 meters above sea level in the Himalayan mountains and is home to various beautiful lakes. The name Chandra Tal is taken from its shape that is like a crescent moon. As per legends, it is believed that at this place Yudhishthira who was the elder in Pandava’s brother picked up the Chariot of God Indra.

2. Key Monastery

The Key Monastery is the largest valley that is located at an altitude of 13500 feet above sea level. Key Monastery gives you the most spectacular view of Kaza. This is a 1000 years old monastery that was established in 1100CE by a Student of Atisha and a famous teacher, Dromtön. 

3. Kunzum Pass

It is the highest motorable pass in India that is located at an elevation of 4551 meters above sea level. Kunzum pass acts as a gateway for Spiti Valley that is going through Kullu and Lahaul. To reach Kunzum pass from Chandratal lake you need to trek for 15km.

4. Pin Valley National Park

This National park is home for more than 20 species of birds and animals including some endangered species like Snoe Leopard etc, which is located in Himachal Pradesh, a state in India. Pin Valley National Park was established in the year 1987 and is located at an elevation from 3300 to 6632 meters above sea level.

5. Suraj Tal

It is also known as Surya Taal, it is a divine lake that is having splendid mountains and mesmerizing valleys all around. This Tal is a part of the Bhaga tributary of the Chandrabhaga river. This is the third-highest lake in India and 21st highest lake in the whole world.

6. Dhankar Monastery

This monastery is located in Dhankar village’s top cliff at an elevation of about 3800 meters above sea level. This monastery was established in the 16th century. During the Erstwhile era, this old fort monastery was served as a prison. 

7. Tabo Monastery

This Monastery is also known as the Ajanta of the Himalayas. It was established back in 996 A.D. it is located at an elevation of 3050 meters above sea level. This monastery was established by the great teacher and translator, Lotsawa Rinchen in the year of Fire Ape.

8. Dhankar Lake

Dhankar lake is one of the beautiful places to be visited in Himachal Pradesh. It is located above the Dhankar village and you need to trek for 45 minutes to reach this lake. The trek is a bit hard to cover as there are crisp mountains and loose pebbles on the way that make you breathless in a few minutes.

9. Kibber

Kibber is a small village which is located in the high altitude of Himachal Pradesh. This is also known as KAyibar and is famous for its wildlife sanctuary and Kibber monastery. There are 366 residents in this village approximately who live in around 80 houses. This village is located at an altitude of 4270 meters above sea level.

10. Baralacha La

This is also known as Baralacha pass which is located over the Zanskar range at an elevation of 16040 feet above sea level. This is an eight km long pass that connects Ladakh of Jammu and Kashmir to Lahaul of Himachal Pradesh. This pass is surrounded by the lush green nature on its sides.

11.  Trilokinath Temple

Sri Trilokinath temple is located in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, India. These are both Hindu and Buddhist temples. Hindus worship Lord Shiva in this temple while the Buddhists worship Arya Avalokiteshvara. The word Trilokinath means the 'Lord of Three worlds' which is also the other name of Lord Shiva.

12. Shashur Monastery

Shashur Monastery was established by Lama Dewa Tyatsho in the 16th century. The best time to visit this monastery is between October to February. It is a Buddhist shrine where the word “Shashur” means the blue pine. It is named so because it is surrounded by blue pine trees on all sides.

13. Gandhola Monastery

Gandhola Monastery is also known as Guru Ghantal Monastery which is located in Himachal Pradesh, India. This monastery was founded in the 8th century in the year 1857 by Guru Rinpoche or Padmasambhava. It is located at an elevation of 3160 meters above sea level.

14. Keylong Market

There are a variety of things to choose from in this market, be it mufflers, woolens, ponchos, shawls, stoles, or caps. The products are majorly made up of Pashmina yarn or Angora, there are various cooperative societies in this market where you can get almost everything from clothes to utensils.

15. Tayul Monastery

Tayul Monastery is also known as Tayul Gompa and is also one of the oldest monasteries located in Northern India. It is located at an altitude of 3900 meters above sea level. This monastery was founded by a Ladakhi who belonged to Tagna monastery named 'Tulku Tashi Tanphel' during the 18th century.

16. Tangyud Monastery

His monastery is located in Spiti valley in the Komic village, at an elevation of 4520 meters above the sea level. Tangyud monastery is also known as the Sakya Tangyud monastery which is located close to Kibber wildlife sanctuary.

17. Kardang Monastery

This is a 900 years old monastery that was established by Lama Norbu Rinpoche during the 12th century. Later it was reconstructed by Lama Kunga and Lama Norbu Rinpoche in the late 20th century.

18. Kungri Monastery

This monastery is located at a distance of 12km from the district headquarters of Spiti valley. This is the second oldest monastery located in Himachal Pradesh, India. This monastery was established in the early 14th century. It was constructed in the year 1330 and is popular among Buddhist and Tibetan pilgrims.

19. Yak Safaris
