The Valley of Flowers is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India, within the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. It lies at an altitude of around 3,600 meters above sea level in the Western Himalayas. It is about 300 km from Rishikesh and 16 km from Govindghat, which serves as the main base for the trek.

To reach Valley of Flowers, you need to first arrive at Rishikesh or Haridwar, which are well connected by road and train. From there, you can travel to Joshimath (via Badrinath highway). Govindghat is the main starting point of the trek, around 22 km from Joshimath. From Govindghat, a 13 km trek leads to Ghangaria village, which is the base camp for the Valley of Flowers. From Ghangaria, you need to trek about 4 km to enter the valley.

The best time to visit Valley of Flowers is from mid-July to mid-September when the flowers are in full bloom after the monsoon rains. During this period, the valley is covered with colorful alpine flowers like orchids, poppies, marigolds, daisies, and primulas. The trek route is also accessible only in this season as the valley remains snow-covered for most of the year.
 

The Valley of Flowers trek is considered a moderate trek suitable for beginners with basic fitness levels. The total trek distance is around 17 km from Govindghat to the valley. The climb involves gradual ascents, stone-paved paths, and river crossings. While it does not require technical climbing skills, trekkers should be prepared for long walks at high altitude (up to 14,000 feet).

Yes, you need an entry permit from the Forest Department to enter the Valley of Flowers National Park. The entry fee for Indians is ₹150 for three days and ₹600 for foreigners. The permits can be obtained at the entry gate in Ghangaria. Carrying a government-issued ID proof is mandatory.

The Valley of Flowers is home to more than 600 species of flowers, including blue poppies, cobra lilies, anemones, orchids, and marigolds. Rare medicinal plants also grow here. Apart from flowers, the valley is rich in biodiversity with wildlife such as Himalayan black bear, snow leopard (rare sightings), musk deer, blue sheep (bharal), and various species of butterflies and birds.

No, overnight stay is not allowed inside Valley of Flowers National Park. Trekkers need to return to Ghangaria village for accommodation. Ghangaria offers budget hotels, lodges, and guesthouses with basic facilities.
 

Yes, Valley of Flowers is suitable for families and kids above 10 years of age with good stamina. However, since the trek involves long walks and high altitude, it may not be ideal for very young children, elderly people with health issues, or those who have breathing problems. Ponies and porters are available up to Ghangaria, but from Ghangaria to the valley, you must trek on foot.
