Places to Visit in Jammu

1. Raghunath Temple

Raghunath temple is one of the prominent Hindu Shrine in Jammu. It is nestled at a very close distance to the Jammu airport. The construction of this marvelous temple started in 1835 AD by Maharaja Gulab Singh and later the construction was continued by his son- Maharaja Ranbir Singh in 1860. This temple is known to be the largest shrine complex in North India.

The Raghunath temple complex has seven temples in total where each temple has a Shikhar of its own. This temple is devoted to Lord Rama- an avatar of Lord Vishnu.

The key highlight of this beautiful temple is its architecture, which is a blend of Sikh and Mughal styles. One can witness the pretty paintings inside the temple that beautifully depicts the chapters of Mahabharat, Bhagwad Geeta, and Ramayana.

2. Bahu Fort

Bahu fort is one of the worth exploring places in Jammu. It was constructed by Raja Gulab Singh of the Dogra empire in the 18th century. It is situated on the opposite side of Jammu’s old town. The majestic walls of this fort are constructed by using black mortar and lime.

One can witness the fabulous Mahalkali temple that is devoted to the goddess Mahakali and is the major attraction inside this fort. It was constructed in the 8th century. Visit this majestic fort for its beautiful garden- Bagh-e- Bahu also surrounds this fort magically and is known for its pretty flower beds, pristine fountains, and the subcontinent’s largest underground aquarium.

3. Manda Zoo

Manda Zoo is an apt place in Jammu for a family vacation. This Zoo is home to several animals like- Hog deer, leopard, barn owl, sambhar, python, porcupine, black partridge, Cheetal, nilgai, Himalayan black bear, and many other creatures too. One can witness the exotic birds too- Turkey and Emu. This Zoo is spread over a small area. It is famed for its immense biodiversity. Visit this superb place for mental solace.

4. Shiv Khori

Shiv Khori is another top attraction in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is among the prominent cave shrines popular among the local community and devotees of Lord Shiva due to the natural Shivlinga formation that is about 150 meters long.

The Shiv Khori Gufa is in the shape of Shiva’s Damroo- wide at 2 ends and congested at the center. The miraculous thing about this cave is the natural milky water dripping from the top to the Shivling symbolizing the eternity of the holy river Ganga.

According to the local people, Shiv Khori Gufa measures half a kilometer in length but the devotees are allowed to go only up to 130 meters. The rest part of the Gufa is still a mystery, no one can go further due to lack of oxygen. This temple is full of natural impressions and full of divine feelings.

5. Balidan Stambh

Balidan Stambh, also popularly known as War Memorial in Jammu was built to honor the military personnel who sacrificed their lives in the Indo-Pak wars ever since independence. Visitors can witness the pillars that are shaped as a bayoneted rifle that symbolizes the brave soldiers of war.

This war memorial has an eternal flame that indicates the immortality of the brave sacrifices done by the forces of the Indian army. The key highlight of this memorial is the light and sound show that is performed by the army.

6. Sheesh Mahal

Sheesh, Mahal or Palace of Mirror is the royal heritage of Jammu and Kashmir and is one of the major attractions to explore in Jammu. It is nestled in Ramnagar and is just adjacent to Ramnagar fort. It was constructed by Raja Ram Singh in 1885. The palace or Mahal got its name from the pretty mirror work that is done inside its walls.

These pretty walls are ornamented with some splendid paintings and murals that depict the ancient epics- Ramayana and Mahabharata. Visitors can also find some other exquisite paintings depicting the life story of Raja Ram Singh and some other former rulers.

7. Surinsar Lake

Surinsar Lake is considered as the twin lake of Mansar lake and is famed for its natural bounty. It is located in Jammu and is also known for its mythological importance. The lake is fantabulously surrounded by majestic mountain ranges.

The Surinsar Mansar wildlife sanctuary with 15 avifauna species is situated amid Surinsar and Mansar lake. Surinsar Lake is very much apt for family picnics. It is indeed a paradise for nature lovers and photographers.  It is truly an ideal gateway for those looking for peace and tranquillity.

8. Baba Dhansar

Baba Dhansar is located near the Karua village of Jammu. It is one of the prominent holy places to pay a visit. Explore some major places in Bab Dhansar- the temple of Baba Dhansar and cave of Lord Shiva when in Jammu.

9. Dargah Garib Shah

Dargah Garib Shah is one of the famous Muslim shrines in Jammu. The dargah is situated in Samba and is at a distance of about 9 km from Jammu airport. This shrine is devoted to the Muslim saint- Baba Garib Shah and the unique thing about this dargah is that the samadhi is looked after by the local Hindu people. People come here to get their wishes fulfilled. This shrine is a true symbol of peace and harmony.

10. Vaishno Devi Temple

Vaishno Devi temple in Katra located in the Jammu region is one of the most visited Hindu shrines in the world. Several pilgrims visit this sacred temple every year. This temple is devoted to Vaishno Devi and is believed that whatever one wishes here gets granted.

This temple is a cave-styled holy temple and is situated at an altitude of 5200 ft above sea level so devotees need to trek 12 km distance to the top from a point. Another way to reach this sacred temple is by helicopter service, pony ride, or palanquin. During Navratras – March- April, and September- November as per the auspicious tithi days it witnesses a major crowd.
