Places to Visit in Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer Fort is built in the classic style of the Royals. This fort is also named 'Sonar Quila'. It was built in 1156 A.D by Rawal Jaisal. The fort is housed with seven Jain temples made up of yellow sandstone between the 12th-16th century. It is a world heritage site. Jaisalmer Fort is included in an important plot in Satyajit Ray’s famous movie Sonar Qela- The Golden Fortress.

1. Jaisalmer Government Museum

The Jaisalmer Government Museum was set up by the Department of Archaeology and museums. The main attraction of this museum is the exhibit of the trophy of Rajasthan’s state bird Godawan- the great Indian Bustard. One can find displayed in the museum- statues from 7th and 9th century A.D, rock-cut crockery and jewelry which depict the city’s rich cultural heritage.

2. Jain Temples Of Jaisalmer       

The Jain temples are situated inside the Jaisalmer fort. The temples are devoted to the two Tirthankaras- Rikhabdevji and Shambhavdevji the Jain hermits. There are seven Jain temples. These temples are chiseled out of yellow sandstone. The temples are built in the famous Dilwara style of architecture that is quite magnificent and beautiful. Tirthankaras mean wise teachers who had taught people how to attain Nirvana.

3. Bada Bagh

Bada Bagh is around 6kms to the north of Jaisalmer. This Bagh or garden is filled with royal cenotaphs of the Maharajas of Jaisalmer including that of Jai Singh II. The tourists can enjoy the sunset view that the place offers to the visitors.

4. Desert National Park

The Desert National Park features all that is best of Thar desert’s ecosystem and wildlife. A number of species of animals like chinkara, desert fox, and blackbuck have their niches here in the park. The world’s heaviest flying bird the Great Indian Bustard can prominently be seen over here.

5. Jaisalmer War Museum

The Jaisalmer War Museum is located at the Jaisalmer military base. This museum displays the soldiers who lost their lives in the 1965 India- Pakistan war and in the longwall battle in 1971. The museum is housed with the seized tanks and other mementos from the battle, inculcating a sense of pride in our country and its soldiers. The museum contains an audio-visual room where the movies about the battle are screened. The museum is situated on the Jaisalmer- Jodhpur highway. This museum thus contains a very important part of the country’s history.

6. Amar Sagar Lake

The Amar Sagar Lake is situated  7km towards the western outskirts of Jaisalmer. It lies adjacent to the Amar Singh Palace. The palace was constructed in the 17th century. Visitors can find a number of ponds, wells, and an old temple devoted to Lord Shiva. Visitors will be enthralled with the mesmerizing sunset view from here.

7. Vyas Chhatri

Vyas Chhatri is situated in Bada Bagh. It is one of the delightful examples of Rajasthani culture. This place is the popular sunset point of Jaisalmer. People and visitors flog in great numbers to get even a momentary view of the beautiful desert sunset. The Chhatris are built-in golden sandstone with beautiful carvings. One can view from here the whole of Jaisalmer Fort and even the surrounding areas. The locals over here play on Algoza which is an interesting sight for the visitors.

8. Gadisar Lake

The Gadisar Lake was built in the 14th century by Maharawal Gadsi Singh. He constructed it to meet the water needs of his arid lands. Many shrines and temples mushroomed around the lake due to which it got transformed into a pilgrimage center. Today it is a center of great tourist attraction.

9. Patwon Ki Haveli

Patwon ki Haveli is a five-storeyed structure that is situated in a narrow street. The inside walls of Patwon ki Haveli have paintings and mirror work art on it. Though it has lost some of its early grandeur yet it cannot go unnoticed that it is the most extensively carved Havelis in Jaisalmer.

10. Kuldhara

The visitors who have an interest in thrills for the haunted places, Kuldhara village will never let them down. In the history of Kuldhara, the legend has it that the exodus of the villagers was such that the villagers vanished from the village in the middle of the night. This village is situated 18 km from Jaisalmer city. It is still an unsolved mystery as the village remains abandoned. It has become a tourist destination due to the great curiosity of the tourists.

11. Tanot Mata Temple

Tanot Mata temple is situated 120km away from Jaisalmer. Tanot Mata is believed to be the rebirth of Goddess Hinglaj. The story behind this temple is that during the 1965 India-Pakistan war, Tanot was under heavy attacks but none of the attacks at the temple was successful, which resulted in building faith among the locals. After the war BSF re-constructed the temple which is being managed under BSF trust today.

12. Akal Wood Fossil Park

The Akal Wood Fossil Park is spread over 21 hectares and contains fossilized tree trunks that are housed in corrugated iron shelters. These fossils belong to a forest that was 180 million years ago in the prehistoric Jurassic era. This forest used to be where the Park stands today. It is a must-visit destination as one will be astonished that this area which is arid today had a hot and humid climate in the pre-historic Jurassic era that supported luxuriant forest. One can behold the rare sight of the fossilized remains of the redwood tree trunk right at the entrance itself.
