Places to Visit in Dharamshala

1. Cricket Stadium

The cricket stadium in Dharamshala is in the lap of the Himalayan mountains. This cricket stadium is the highest cricket stadium in the world located at an elevation of 1457 meters above sea level. This stadium adds extra beauty and a natural backdrop.

The fresh and cold breeze blowing with indigo skies and the wast lush green huge fields. The view of this stadium is a comparable level to Newlands or Adelaide Oval. This is the most magnificent cricket stadium. This cricket stadium is located in the foothills of the Dhauladhar mountain range in Kangra valley. This stadium is often used as the practice ground for the Indian cricket team, the state-level cricket team of Himachal Pradesh, and also for the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kings XI Punjab.

There are various amenities provided in this cricket ground that can be used for hosting sone National and Internationa level cricket match. This stadium is having a seating capacity of 23,000 persons at a time. The best part about this stadium is that there is no fence before the seating area which gives a clear view of the match to the crowd.

2. Library of Tibetan Work

This library is having manuscripts and artifacts that are around of 12th century. It is one of the pioneering institutions for the study and research regarding Buddhism. There are 600 Buddhist artifacts and 80,000 manuscripts which include beautifully crafted silk applique thangkas and Mandal of Avalokiteshwara that is woodenly carved, also one of the revered Bodhisattva in Buddhism. The people who visit this place experience peace and serenity.

3. St. John in the Wilderness Church

St. John in the Wilderness Church was constructed in 1852 and is one of the most important churches present in Himachal Pradesh. It is located on the way from Dharamshala to Mcleodganj. The church is having Neo-gothic architecture that was dedicated to John the Baptist.

This church is located in a dense woody area that why it is named as wilderness. This is the oldest build structure in Dharamshala. The body of Lord Ergin Viceroy of India during British rule and also governor-general is resting in peace at this place.

4. War Memorial

This war memorial is located in the forest area of hill town Dharamshala. It was constructed in the memory of soldiers that were war heroes of Kangra who fought for saving their motherland in the Indo-China war that was held in 1947-48, 1962, 1965 and 1971.

This war memorial was constructed out of 3 black and huge stones that were 24 feet each. This memorial is surrounded by pine forests and lush green gardens. The name of the soldiers is etched on the stones.

5. Gyuto Monastery

Gyuto Monastery is the beautiful Monastery that is popularly known for the study of Tantric meditation and Philosophy in Dharamshala. This Monastery promotes the trading of black magic which is also known as Tantric teachings and was founded in1959. Blackmagic is known for harming someone but the opposite of that it can be also used for well being of others.  The early morning rays of the sun fall on the gold-plated statue of Buddha located on the premises makes the view more mesmerizing.

6. Dal Lake

This lake is located in the Kangra district and is located at a medium altitude. This place is mainly visited by nature lovers and also a must visited place by nature lovers as the dal lake offers the best trekking path which the peaceful and calming walkthrough. You can find different types of fish and marine like in Dal lake.

The name of this lake was kept on the name of Dal lake located in Kashmire. In the surrounding of this lake, there are 1775 meter long deodar trees and also a shiva temple located near the lake.

7. Tea Garden

Dharamshala is having the smallest tea garden in India. It is a beautiful garden organized in a low of the tea plant in the Kangra valley. This tea garden is famous for its best quality tea leaves that are available in all stores across Dharamshala and Mcleodganj.

8. Triund

Triund is located at an elevation of 2828 meters above sea level a few km away from Dharamshala. It is the majestic escape in Himachal Pradesh. Triund in Kangra valley provides an awesome experience to adventure enthusiasts too. The trek is of 2km from either Dharamkot or Mcleodganj.

Camping is not permitted in this area either you be in a group or solo. The Magic view cafe here is still operational but needs to carry your own water bottle and packed food if planning to visit this place.

9. Jwala Devi Temple

Jwala Devi temple is in Kangra valley which attracts Hindu devotees in a huge number. It is located at a distance of 56km from Dharamshala in the 34km south of Kangra valley. The temple is dedicated to Jwala Devi.

It is said that Goddess Jwala Devi transformed herself into a blue undying flame that can not be vanished even by using water. When the evil spirit landed on Earth and harassed the gods.

Then this flame vanished them. It was directed by Lord Shiva. All the power of all gods were fused into one to make this flame powerful.

10. Tsuglagkhang, Mcleodganj

This is the place where Dalai Lama lives in Himachal Pradesh. There are monasteries and several stupas, temples, cafes, and book stores here. This place attracts a huge crowd of tourists throughout the year.

Each part of this complex is open for tourists except the part where Dalai Lama actually resides. You can even get the chance to meet the Holiness if you are that lucky. There is a museum that is having imprints of Tibetan culture art and craft which is the main point of attraction among the tourists.

11. Bhagsu fall

Bhagsu fall is again the most visited tourist place in Dharamshala that is having calmness and silence in the surrounding. People often visit this place for picnicking with their family and loved ones. The main attraction of this place is the Bhagsunath temple. This waterfall is around 30 feet in height.

12. Trekking

Trekking is the most experienced sport in Dharamshala by adventure enthusiasts. In Dharamshala, there are many institutes that organize the trek here. To experience the trekking in its true sense you can also take the trekking guide along with you on this adventure.

13.  Namgyal Monastery, Mcleodganj 

This place is located at 3 km from Dharamshala. From here you can have a view of the Dhauladhar range. Namgyal monastery is also located inside the complex of Tsuglagkhang. This complex was also the home of the Dalai Lama. this complex is having Shrines, bookstores, souvenir shops, and shrines.

14.  Bhagsu Nath temple

Bhagsu temple is located at a distance of 3km from Dharamshala, at an elevation of 1770 m above sea level. This place is surrounded by a lush green forest and a beautiful pool. Many devotees get attracted to this place throughout the year. 

15. Tibet Museum, Mcleodganj

This museum is located in Mcleodganj in Dharamshala. It is the official museum of the Central Tibetan Administration Department of Information and International Relations. This temple is constructed in the Tibetan style of yellow and white color.

16. Dalai Lama Temple

It is also known as the Tsuglakhang temple and is a politico-religious center in Dharamshala. You can find lamas in the temple permisses who kept on chanting prayers wheels or beards. The gigantic complex is having the huge statue of Padmasambhava, Avalokiteshvara and

Buddhist monks. The main attraction here is numerous idols of Buddha sitting on an elevated pedestal. The main wheel of prayer on which “OM MANI PADME HUM” is written and this wheel is rotated by devotees and ita is believed that on rotation this wheel the merit gets multiplied and the devotees get enormously blessed.

17. Kangra art Museum

This museum represents the rich history of Buddhist and Tibetan artwork. There is a large number of valuables that are kept here such as jewelry, rare coins, painting, sculptures, memorabilia, and pottery. The antique pieces represent the culture in the form of art that is beautifully painted.  

18. Masroor Rock cut temple

It is situated at a distance of 32km from Kangra. It is located on Nagrota-Surian link Road in Dharamshala. This is the ruins archaeological site the architecture of this temple is in Indo-Aryan and the complex is having around 15 rock-cut temples. As per relics, this temple was constructed in the 8th century.

19.  Aghanjar Mahadev temple

Aghanjar Mahadev temple is located at a distance of 5 km from Dharamshala in the Khaniyara area. Aghanjar Mahadev temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is in the foothills of the Dhauladhar range. This temple is approx 500 years old. The temple is located in the scenic beauty of emerald mountain peaks and lush green forests.
