Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these temples are renowned for their stunning Nagara-style architecture and intricate erotic sculptures that symbolize the union of divine and human energies. The blend of spirituality, art, and heritage makes Khajuraho one of the most iconic destinations in India.

Khajuraho is located in the Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, central India. It lies about 175 km southeast of Jhansi and 620 km from Delhi. Surrounded by the Vindhya hills and rural landscapes, Khajuraho offers travelers not just its famous temples but also a glimpse into the cultural and natural beauty of Madhya Pradesh.

The best time to visit Khajuraho is during the winter months from October to March when the weather is pleasant, making sightseeing comfortable. The Khajuraho Dance Festival, held every February, is also a major attraction that showcases classical Indian dance forms against the backdrop of the illuminated temples, offering visitors a memorable cultural experience.

Originally, Khajuraho had around 85 temples, but today only about 22 have survived in good condition. These temples are divided into three groups: Western, Eastern, and Southern. The Western group, including the Kandariya Mahadev, Lakshmana, and Vishwanath temples, is the most popular and frequently visited by tourists due to its grandeur and artistic detailing.

The erotic carvings in Khajuraho temples represent much more than physical intimacy. They symbolize the celebration of life, the balance between spiritual and worldly desires, and the Tantric philosophy of merging the physical with the divine. These sculptures cover only about 10% of the temple artwork, with the rest depicting deities, celestial beings, musicians, and scenes from daily life.

Khajuraho is well connected by air, rail, and road. The Khajuraho Airport (HJR) has flights from Delhi, Varanasi, and other major cities. The Khajuraho Railway Station connects it to Jhansi, Satna, and Mahoba. Roadways also link Khajuraho to nearby cities like Jhansi, Satna, and Bhopal, making it accessible for travelers from across India.

While the temples are the main highlight, Khajuraho offers several other attractions. The Raneh Falls on the Ken River, the Ken Gharial Sanctuary, and the Ajaigarh Fort are popular among nature and history enthusiasts. The Light and Sound Show held every evening at the Western Group of Temples is another must-see experience narrating the history of Khajuraho.

A minimum of two days is recommended to explore Khajuraho thoroughly. One full day is needed to visit the Western Group of Temples, while the second day can be used for the Eastern and Southern groups along with nearby attractions like Raneh Falls or Panna National Park, which is just 45 km away and offers thrilling wildlife safaris.
